"Del Mar SUPER POWER Angles"

With the exception of one new bet, Del Mar's 2010 wagering options will mirror those of past seasons when the seaside course "where the turf meets the surf" rolls out its seven-week season starting Wednesday, July 21.

For the 2009 meet Joel Rosario led all riders with 55 victories and landed in the money at a 52% clip. John Sadler copped the trainers' title with 31 winners from 126 starters (25%). No owner landed more than 5 victories but Jay Em Ess Stable went 5/5/2 from 17 starts (59% in the money). The top win percentage barn was Southern Equine who fired 36% (5 for 14).

Some of the jury is still out about Del Mar's polytrack going into it's fourth year of use but general handicapping principles still apply. One thing that is readily apparent is that the track is faster in the morning before the sun begins to warm it up so work tabs should not be weighed as heavily as they would be on a normal dirt surface. This information is especially valuable when handicapping two-year-old races in which not a lot run lines are available.

Like all new meets the early Del Mar racing days require a close look for bias trends. Be aware of the "horse for the course" since the Hollywood synthetic track from which most horses ship is a different animal. Bear in mind that Joel Rosario, Garrett Gomez and Rafael Bejarano will be riding almost half the live mounts.

Del Mar racing is among the nation's best and gets even better with new 50-cent Pick 4 for 2010. There will be one pick four per day, on the final four races, and the reduced minimum cost will drive handle by allowing bettors to select more combinations for more affordable sums.

The new bet is one that has proven highly popular at other racing venues and is expected to find a happy home among Del Mar's faithful. It is a 50¢ Pick Four, which will be offered on the final four races daily on the Wednesday through Sunday cards.

Del Mar will feature the standard win, place and show wagering on all its races, as well as the following "exotic" bets:
  • $2 Pick Six (on the day's final six races)

  • $2 Rolling Double (on all races but the last)

  • $2 Quinella (all races)

  • $2 Parlay

  • 50¢ Pick Four (offered on the final four races daily)

  • $1 Rolling Pick Three (starting with the first race and ending with the last three)

  • $1 Super High Five (on the day's final race)

  • $1 Place Pick All

  • $1 Exacta (all races)

  • $1 Trifecta (all races with at least 6 betting interests)

  • Minimum 10¢ Superfecta (races with at least 8 betting interests).
Del Mar's 37-day meeting begins Wednesday, July 21 and runs through Wednesday, September 8. Racing will be conducted Wednesdays through Sundays with Mondays and Tuesdays dark except for Monday, September 6th, Labor Day.

The meet will host 42 stakes races (20 of which are graded) with 8 Grade 1 races on tap. The Highlight of the meet is the Grade 1 Pacific Classic to be run on Saturday, August 28th.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge, a series of automatic qualifying races for the Breeders' Cup World Championships, will increase expansion this year with a record 65 races taking place in seven countries at the world's greatest racing venues. Del Mar Racetrack will host eight races during the 2010 Breeders' Cup Challenge Season beginning on July 30 with the Cougar Handicap, a Marathon qualifier. The $1 million Pacific Classic is also part of the Challenge Series and will serve as one of four Breeders' Cup Classic qualifiers at Del Mar.

The Del Mar Racetrack first opened in 1937 and except for a three-year hiatus during WWII has been in constant operation for summer racing ever since. One fall meet was conducted in 1967 but that experiment has not been repeated.

The synthetic main track at Del Mar is a one-mile oval with two chutes to accommodate various distances. The seven-eights turf course has a chute into the infield that allow grass races up to 9 furlongs to go through two turns. The distance to the wire off the final turn is 919 feet.

Now on with the
"Del Mar SUPER POWER Angles"

  • Del Mar Final Time All-Weather Track/Turf Power Angle

On all-weather tracks (Polytrack, Tapeta, Cushion Track, Pro Ride, etc) look for horses that have the BEST FINAL TIME RATING OF THIS FIELD ON ALL WEATHER TRACKS ICON and are going off at 8-1 odds or higher.

In races run on the turf look for horses that have the BEST FINAL TIME ON THE TURF ICON and are going off at 8-1 or higher.

There can only be 1 horse per race with this icon (at rare times 2 can be tied for best because we have a highest ML odds tie-breaker). If the horse also has some additional profit icon(s) it's a big plus.

The horse with this designation has already proven to be able to run a better final time speed rating on an all-weather surface or turf (in turf races) than the rest of the horses in the race. This is extremely important because not every horse runs its best on the synthetic surfaces.

You can get good overlay winners with this angle because often the race that gives this horse the top final time rating was a few races ago and the betting public is only most interested in what a horse did in its most recent start.

While the most recent race is important it does not usually, completely and accurately display the absolute overall true talent of each racehorse in the current timeframe.

Thoroughbreds are not machines nor are they computers. They do not always run a bad race nor do they always run a good race. There are exceptions to the every rule however but for the most part every horse runs in cycles of highs and lows and goes through the time spent getting to each high and low.

Depending a lot on the trainer's intentions and techniques, horses can round into a high level its form cycle gradually or quickly. The trick is to look at each horse as a different entity and what it has done in its past 3 to 5 races.

Once you find a horse that fits one of these criteria go on to the FINAL POWER QUALIFIER.

  • Del Mar Turn Time Rating Power Angle

Look for horses that have the highest Turn Time Rating (TTR) and are going off at 8-1 or higher. Ties count.

This rating is located in between the owner's name and the horse's last few race finish positions. We introduced this rating in 2008 and it has proven to be very effective.

Turn Time Rating takes into account the speed at which a horse makes the final turn before straightening up for the stretch run. The horse with the top rating can appear anywhere in the selection order.

Take note if the horse with the highest TTR in the race also has the highest rating for either early, mid or late pace. This is a very positive bonus. Especially mid pace!

Watch for a top TTR horse who shows another of these 36 angles but really nothing else. Often the high TTR plus the extra angle equals a big overlay win.

Once you find a horse that fits one of these criteria go on to the FINAL POWER QUALIFIER.

  • Del Mar Total Pace Rating Power Angle

Look for a horse that has the TOTAL PACE ADVANTAGE ICON and is going off at 8-1 odds or higher.

There can only be 1 horse per race to have this icon and some races won't have any (because of a tie). Once again this simple angle will really surprise you how well it works.

When there is a tie for the highest total pace rating the icon is not generated however the top ratings are still underlined. You might want to consider this if one of them is going off at 8-1 or higher.

This rating takes into account the middle and late stages of the race. Usually the horse with the highest total pace will be an automatic contender in most races. Ties count.

If you see a horse that qualifies for this angle and AND also has the LATE PACE ADVANTAGE ICON and/or EARLY/MID PACE ADVANTAGE ICON it becomes a super fantastic mini mega angle!

Also take note of horses who do not have the aforementioned pace icons but are a top rating (remember: it is underlined) in the categories of Early Pace (ER PA), Mid Pace (MD PA), Late Pace (LT PA), or the highest Turn Time Rating (TTR) of the field.

This angle does very well in turf races as well as synthetic track surfaces.

Once you find a horse that fits one of these criteria go on to the FINAL POWER QUALIFIER.

  • Del Mar All-Weather Track Pedigree Power Angle

The following angle can be very strong in maiden races, especially for first time starters and if it's the only horse in the race it's fantastic.

Actually this angle can be used in any race as long as the horse is the only horse in the race to have this icon.

Horses that are the only one in the race to have the or EXCELLENT PEDIGREE FOR ALL-WEATHER TRACKS ICONS make strong angle plays.

The one with the plus sign is a little stronger. Look for these going postward at 8-1 or higher near post time.

Once you find a horse that fits one of these criteria go on to the FINAL POWER QUALIFIER.

  • Del Mar Late Pace Power Angle

Look for a horse that has the LATE PACE ADVANTAGE ICON and is going off at 8-1 odds or higher.

There can only be 1 horse per race to have this icon and some races won't have any (because of a tie). Once again this simple angle will really surprise you how well it works.

When there is a tie for the highest late pace rating the icon is not generated however the top ratings are still underlined. You might want to consider this if one of them is going off at 8-1 or higher.

If one of those tied horses is going off at 8-1 or higher it can be considered an angle play if it's an overlay compared to true odds.

This angle works on all surfaces (turf, dirt, all-weather tracks) and at all distances (sprints, middle routes, long routes).

This angle is especially EXTREMELY important in turf races in both sprint and route distances. Even races as short as 5 furlongs as long as it is a turf race.

Sometimes you will see qualifying horses ranked low in power rating. Just make sure you are getting good/strong overlay on this horse.

If a qualifying horse has at least a 5 point advantage in the late pace over the horse with the second highest rating it is definitely significant.

Once you find a horse that fits one of these criteria go on to the FINAL POWER QUALIFIER.

  • Del Mar Hot Power Angle

Jockeys and trainers get hot and cold. There are dozens of reasons why but do we really need to think too much on this issue?

It's obvious a trainer cannot keep his entire barn winning all the time however he can certainly have them all fit & ready, placed right and injury free for a period of time.

The trick is to jump on this money train while it's still running. This brings us to this next super angle. Look for a horse who has:

    A)   HOT JOCKEY ICON or

    B)   HOT TRAINER ICON and

is going off at 8-1 odds or higher.

If this horse also has any other somewhat related icon like the JOCKEY SWITCH TO A HOT JOCKEY ICON or any other significant icon, it makes the play even more live.

Don't be afraid to play a horse with a hot jockey or trainer if the particular horse has not shown much positive lately. The human intentions sometimes override the basic handicapping set of rules.

This angle becomes a stronger play if only one horse in the race has one of these HOT icons.

Also a hot trainer who has the OVERLAY TRAINER ICON is worth noting.

And a hot jockey who has the OVERLAY JOCKEY ICON is definitely worth noting.

There is a high impact value on HOT TRAINERS in maiden races so watch closely for that. Usually a maiden can make a huge improvement and it makes sense if a hot trainer has his or her whole barn on a carefully planned "up cycle".

Another high impact value is when a horse has both the HOT JOCKEY ICON and the HOT TRAINER ICON. Even though this would seem obvious sometimes the best gold nuggets of information are overlooked by the majority of the betting public.

Another thing to look for is when a hot trainer has an entry and scratches one of them. As long as you get 8-1 odds or higher you will be backing the confidence of a trainer who is make all the right decisions lately.

A HOT JOCKEY horse who also has a SUCCESSFUL TRAINER PATTERN ICON is another strong combination to keep an eye out for.

Once you find a horse that fits one of these criteria go on to the FINAL POWER QUALIFIER.
